Deep Pete

The biplane lies on its back with the remains of its central float pointing upwards; its tail is broken but the outline of the aircraft is remarkably intact. Being only about 9.5 m long with an 11 m wingspan, it is small, yet its depth leaves little bottom time, so photographers often plan two dives. A resident school of yellow sweetlips streams around the wings, while batfish, barracuda, jacks and snappers gather around this lone feature on the sand. On an incoming tide from the Pacific side visibility is often above 30 m. The wreck was found in 2004.
