City of Winchester
Conosciuto anche come: City of Winchester wreck
The City of Winchester was taken by the cruiser SMS Koenigsberg on her way home from her maiden voyage, emptied of her coal and sunk with explosives set off in the engine room in August 1914. Divers from Oman came across the wreck in 1986, and it was identified as the City of Winchester in the late 1990s. Much of the superstructure has collapsed, leaving the engine and boilers open to view among bollards, winches, railings and a binnacle. Soft corals, anemones and sea fans grow over the remains, which shelter scorpionfish, lionfish and large honeycomb morays. Schools of fusiliers, jacks and barracuda, big groupers, batfish and passing trevally and tuna turn it into a busy artificial reef. Diving the wreck was banned for some years; SSI reported that the ban was lifted and the Oman Explorer liveaboard was given access.
