Mesudiye Battleship
Conosciuto anche come: Mesudiye
Mesudiye was ordered from the Thames Iron Works in 1872 and modernised in Italy between 1899 and 1904, becoming the largest Ottoman battleship. In December 1914 it lay at anchor in Sarısığlar Bay as a floating battery protecting the strait's minefields when the British submarine B11 slipped past the mines and torpedoed it. Türkiye Today calls it the first shipwreck of the Gallipoli campaign. Much of the ship was salvaged in the 1960s, so divers find scattered remains rather than an intact hull. The site lies very close to the shore in shallow water.
