Kushimoto

Japón

Mainland Japan's best-known coral diving area at the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula, where the Kuroshio current supports large table coral colonies and a mix of subtropical and temperate fish.

Kushimoto lies at the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture, on Honshu. The warm Kuroshio current allows hard corals to grow far north, and the area is known for large table coral colonies and around 120 coral species, with subtropical and temperate fish species found side by side. Its coastal waters are a Ramsar wetland, and part of the coast lies in Yoshino-Kumano National Park. Many dive shops operate along National Highway 42, and sources count between about 20 and 27 shops offering shore and boat dives for all levels. Kushimoto Marine Park has an undersea observatory. In 2018 a meander of the Kuroshio brought cold water that killed much of the coral. Kushimoto Station on the JR Kii Main Line is about three hours from Shin-Osaka.
