Short-term visitors will find ample to keep them active in cosmopolitan Montevideo, charming Colonia and party-till-you-drop Punta del Este. But it pays to dig deeper. Enjoy wildlife beside the Atlantic seashore, hot-spring-soaking up the Río Uruguay, or horseback riding beneath the huge sky where huge fields expand like oceans. Uruguay is in fact the ideal place to see some wonderful landscape, away from the typical tourist crowds that you find in more popular locations. Most people perhaps wouldn’t visualize Uruguay when thinking of amazing beach spots, but there is a location in Uruguay that will truly take your breath away.
The main internal river is the Río Negro ('Black River'). Numerous lagoons are found along the Atlantic coast. If you are a diver, then you will find this destination even more attractive because it has amazing sites to view under the waves as well as above. This is Punta del Este on the southern shore of Uruguay and it is Uruguay’s best kept secret. There are numerous dive sites in Punta del Este. The first of these is Gorriti Island, a stunning oasis with an appealing history. Gorriti Island offers divers amazing cave diving. Other dive spots in Punta del Este include Minas and Maldonado Bay.
