All the unspoiled nature in Kazakhstan is incredible. Once a significant part of the ancient Silk Road trade route, Kazakhstan today is one of the most hidden Central Asian destinations. Its stunning natural attractions are amazingly diverse, yet they are not widely known. The country stretches across 1.1 million square miles of snow-capped mountains, deep canyons, vast swaths of steppes, and arid deserts of Central Asia. Add to this the capability to discover an ancient nomadic way of life, try foods you wouldn’t usually eat, and visit the city of the future and its clear: Kazakhstan deserves an extended break in your journey on a Central Asian adventure.
Kazakhstan has plenty of clean, fresh, clear water. Just 80 miles from Almaty is one of the most ethereal freshwater diving experiences to be had in Asia. Sitting among the Tian Shan Mountains in the South of Kazakhstan is the 400-meter long Lake Kaindy. An earthquake in 1911 triggered a landslide. As a result, the gorge filled with rainwater – flooding and covering the forest that lay there, forming the lake. One of the benefits of freshwater diving is the calm water, but this dive is not for beginners. Divers yearning a bathe into the mountain water, no matter what time of year, will get a chilly welcome.
