The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) consists of 607 islands spread across over a million square miles of the Pacific Ocean between Indonesia and Hawaii. Only 65 of the islands are populated, and the four states -- Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae -- are unique in their cultures, panorama and tourist facilities. The major attractions for visitors are top-notch dive sites, gorgeous landscapes to explore and fascinating ancient cultures. The islands vary considerably in landscape. Some are high and hilly, several are flat coral atolls, and some are rugged volcanic outcroppings. Throughout the islands you will find pristine sandy beaches, waterfalls, lakes and streams, gorges and valleys, mangrove forests and grasslands. The tropical vegetation that thrives on the islands includes orchids, hibiscus, coconut, plumeria and banana trees.
As a travel destination, the Federated States of Micronesia is basically well-known for its amazing scuba diving. All four states offer exceptional diving experiences with the most famous being Yap and Chuuk. The former is renowned for its resident manta rays, which can be seen almost year-round. At Chuuk, Truk Lagoon is one of the top places in the earth for wreck diving. Pohnpei and Kosrae are gradually gaining fame with their gorgeous atolls and stretches of pure coral reef. At Chuuk, almost all dives are to see shipwrecks as there are many which lie within recreational diver depth limits.
