Mountainous landscapes, fascinating villages, and a zeal for coffee and cake are just a handful of reasons why paying a visit to Austria is a must for those hoping to take a trip to Europe one day. Everywhere you turn in Austria, history comes alive. Walking through radiance rows of arsenals in the 17th-century Graz armory, you can nearly perceive Styrian lords leading their troops on horseback against intruders. Inside the Salzburg Cathedral, Mozart’s hands still float across the organ, and Habsburg rulers seem to gaze at you from the portrait hall in Ambras Castle. Austria blends old and new impeccably, and the outcome is exhilarating.
The Salzkammergut area of Austria has nearly 170 lakes. A favorite is Lake Attersee, where there are dive sites in abundance to explore, in this, the largest of the area’s lakes. Nazi treasures were once held in Wolfgangsee, and though you can’t take them with you, you can still see them on a dive. Definitely the most popular dive site in all of Austria is the Green Lake, or Grüner See. Half of the year, the lake is in fact a park that surrounds a shallow lake. The spring melts funnels water down to the park, filling it with clean, clear water. Suddenly, the park is altered into a huge lake of up to 30 feet (10 meters), and sometimes more.
